SB Order 10/2025 β Freezing of Matured Small Savings Accounts
π What Is SB Order 10/2025 About?
SB Order 10/2025 reiterates and strengthens the provisions of SB Order 25/2022 regarding the freezing of Small Savings Scheme accounts that have matured but remain unclosed for more than three years.
To safeguard the hard-earned deposits of account holders, matured accounts that are not closed even three years after maturity will be automatically frozen using the freeze reason code:
INOP: Inoperative more than 3 years
π Which Accounts Are Affected?
The order applies to all matured (but unclosed) accounts under the following schemes:
- Monthly Income Scheme (MIS)
- Senior Citizens Savings Scheme (SCSS)
- Time Deposit (TD)
- Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP)
- National Savings Certificate (NSC)
- Recurring Deposit (RD)
- Public Provident Fund (PPF) (Only if matured and not extended)
π Freezing Schedule β Twice a Year
To maintain regularity and strengthen compliance, freezing will now be carried out twice every year, on a fixed cycle:
Cycle | Freezing Period | Eligible Accounts |
---|---|---|
Cycle 1 | From 1st January (15 days) | Accounts matured up to 31st December (3 years prior) |
Cycle 2 | From 1st July (15 days) | Accounts matured up to 30th June (3 years prior) |
Example:
An account that matured on 30 June 2022 will be eligible for freezing from 1 July 2025 if it is not yet closed.
π οΈ Handling of Frozen Accounts
All Head Post Offices and Sub Post Offices must follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) already outlined in SB Order 25/2022 when dealing with such frozen accounts.
- The account can be revived and closed upon the depositorβs request by following the proper process.
- No further interest will accrue on such accounts once frozen.
π’ Instructions to Post Offices
- The identification and freezing process must be completed within 15 days from the start of each cycle (1st January & 1st July).
- Post offices must ensure timely action to prevent security or compliance issues.
π Authority Note
This revised freezing cycle is implemented with the approval of the Competent Authority and will be part of the continuous compliance routine from now on.
π What Should Depositors Do?
- If your account matured over 3 years ago and you havenβt closed it, visit your post office immediately.
- Avoid letting matured funds lie idle β they may be frozen.
